About Richard Merlin Schalow
Richard Merlin Schalow, of Mesa, Arizona was welcomed to heaven on March 14, 2022.
Dick was born June 19,1932 in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Merlin and Margie Schalow. Life on a farm taught him, his four brothers and sister the life lessons of hard work and discipline. His service to his country as a proud Marine during the Korean conflict inspired him to live what he was taught—to be Always Faithful. Dick married Jeanette Leatherman in February of 1955. Soon after sons, Tom, Steve, Larry, and Greg arrived as the young family settled in Monona. Dick was a barber, whose barber shop became a decades-old fixture located opposite the high school. Retiring in 1994, Dick and Jeanette traveled the country and the world to visit their sons and their families. Trips and extended stays in Singapore, Japan, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Arizona filled their active and much-anticipated retirement years. Ultimately, they chose Mesa as their final home.
Dick’s life and memory will be cherished and honored by his wife Jeanette, sons Tom (Isabelle), Larry (Melinda), and Greg (Jo). Dick and Jeanette’s dear son Steve predeceases them, along with beloved daughters-in-law Tammie, Anne, Dick’s parents, and his brother Russell. Grandchildren Ian (Vicky), Trevor (Danielle), Ryan (Sarah), Emily, Michael, Stephanie, Grace, and Sam remain with a lifetime of memories and stories of their grandpa. Great-grandchildren Chad, Maddex, Amelia, Adie, Lillian, and Layna also knew and loved Big Grandpa. Dick is further loved and survived by brothers Jerry, Ken (Bonnie), Jim (Jane) and sister Shirley and their families. Numerous other family members, some joining the family recently and others from long ago, will also remember Dick fondly.
Dick was a humble, contented, generous and grateful man who enjoyed the finer things in life—taking daily, long walks with his wife, spending time with his family near and far, relaxing on the porch, and watching ballgames on television. He lived a life of loving service to his savior Jesus Christ, his family, and his country. Always faithful, he has finally been welcomed by Jesus to his eternal home in heaven with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
