About Michael Joseph Janis

Michael left us on April 30th. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Josephine Janis of Phoenix and his brother, Tom Janis. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his daughter, Andrea (Larry) Winters; three grandchildren, Adam, Will and Jenna; brother, Bob (Patty) Janis and their son, Bobby (Audrey) and their two, children Nolan and Avila.

Michael was a native Phoenician. Mike served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War (several months on sea duty) and received the National Defense Service Medal – Vietnam Service Medal One Bronze Star. Mike was a 30-year member of The American Legion Chandler Chapter.

After being honorably discharged Mike began a 28-year career at Motorola in Phoenix as a Production Control Manager which allowed him to travel around the world including Guadalajara, Mexico; Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines where he enjoyed many work trips and made many friends – he loved to try their food! After Motorola, Mike worked for Maricopa County nurses for 2 years and he finished his career at Honeywell Tempe retiring at age 66.

Growing up he loved to play baseball, hunt, fish and camp. He continued being an avid outdoorsman for his entire life. As an adult he loved to golf and was on several bowling leagues with his wife Dorothy – he even scored a perfect game (300 points). His love of baseball continued with being a season ticketholder of the Arizona Diamondbacks! He was a loyal parishioner of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tempe.

Mike loved his family and took a lot of joy from being with Andrea, Larry and his grandkids. He was very proud of them and never missed a family activity.

A Memorial in remembrance of Michael’s life will be May 30, 2026, at Bunker Family Garden Chapel Mesa with later internment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel, www.bunkerfuneral.com. Should this obituary appear anywhere but bunkerfuneral.com, please check our website for accurate details and service information.

My deepest sympathy Dorthy for the loss of a great man. I considered Mike my second father. He could not have treated me nicer or more respectfully, I loved him deeply.
