Carl McArthur Funeral Program
Carl J. McArthur, 84, of Queen Creek, Arizona, passed away on December 9, 2022, peacefully in his home, surrounded by his wife and family. Carl was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His was a life of dedicated service to the Church, including serving as District Missionary, Elders Quorum President, Bishop, Counselor in the Stake Presidency, Stake President (twice), Regional Welfare Agent, and Patriarch. Carl and Catherine served two missions for the Church. He was eager to serve those in his community and he was selfless with his time; he was known to drop everything to help others. Carl never met a stranger! He would not hesitate to talk to anyone… including people at the gas station and the gym!
He was known for his great love of food, including Southern cooking, bakery sweets, Five Guys Burgers, Krispy Kreme donuts, and chocolate shakes! He loved country music… especially George Strait and Alan Jackson, and he was a BIG fan of Alabama Crimson Tide football.
Carl married Catherine on March 10, 1961. They spent 62 years happily married. They lived most of their lives in Pensacola, Florida, where they raised eight children. They also resided in Panama City, Florida, where Carl retired from Arizona Chemical in 1999, and for the last four years, they lived in Queen Creek, Arizona, to be closer to family.
Carl is survived by his loving and dear wife Catherine (Sue); children, Dean (Sharon), Brent (Kimber), Russell (Lisa), Amy (Mark), Brian (Kora), Anna (Curt), Serena (Sunny), and David (Kara); twenty-five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his adoring sister, Sophia Lehrfeld.
He was preceded in his passing by his parents, Richard and Rettie; and his brothers J.P., Curtis, Raymond, and Jimmy.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of the Lord’s servant. We had the privilege of having President McArthur as our Stake President twice. His example as a disciple of Jesus Christ is far reaching. He had a love for the temple and the saving ordinances preformed therein and made sure everyone had ample opportunity to go to the House of the Lord. His straightforward approach to life and his love of all mankind are an exemplary model for all of us to follow. Our prayers and thoughts are with you Catherine as well as your dear family.

Our condolences to the McArthur family. We loved getting to know Carl and some of the family when you lived in Panama City. As mentioned in his service, I remember how he introduced cultural events to our Stake. I had quite a spiritual experience at one such event ( as a nonmember at the time), which ended up touching our Bishop, Don White, as well. Dale had a very moving experience while giving a blessing ( with Carl) to a sister in our ward. Carl was certainly a man of God, which we both testify to from our personal experiences. May your family’s faith bring peace to you all until you can be together again.

A truly great servant of the Lord. While he will be missed, I’m sure that there are others on the other side of the veil that welcome him home. My heart goes out to his family that surely miss him.

We are saddened to hear of President McArthur’s passing. We absolutely love and respect this giant of a man. His daughter, Amy is one of our dearest friends and spoke highly of her father often. We honor and respect his family and love them very much. His integrity, humble service, dedication and steadfast faith lives on in his posterity. Bless you all.

I know his family will miss him but I just wanted to share my memories. I first met Brother McArthur and his sweet family in Pensacola. 13 years later he was president McArthur in our Lynn Haven ward. When I was teaching Seminary one year then a few parents had complaints and it was a difficult time. One morning after class he walked up to me and complimented me on how great a teacher I was. I thought he was just being encouraging but I soon found out he had been secretly listening to our lesson on the other side of the partition. From that point on he was my defender and fan. I will always remember the kind and sincere words that day. I know he is on the other side serving the Lord there as he did here. My prayers to his family that the Lord will give them comfort during this trying time. Looking forward to seeing him again.

To me he was always “President McArthur.” He went out of his way to acknowledge everyone, shaking your hand and calling you by name. I can’t begin to imagine how many lives he touched by his Christlike example. My condolences to the McArthur family.

I have many memories with Carl and Sue. They begin with Carl when the missionaries first came to his parents home. I was at his baptism. We were in the Priest Quorum together. We double dated frequently. Our favorite dates was when the girls made dinner for us. Sue was such a good cook, even then. There was the trip to the New Orleans stake Patriarch for our Patriarchal Blessing. There were camping trips, few. Carl wasn’t much of a camper in the beginning. I remember the time we camped in the Navy campground under the moss cover Oak trees. The moss was loaded with chiggers. We got blasted, Carl got the worst. He had to go to the emergency room or at least the doctor (that was a long time ago and my memory dims). He counted over 100 chigger bites on his body. There was the week camping at Wood Badge training at the Scout camp in Defuniak Springs and oh so many church meetings and assignments together. What amazing times we had together. Unfortunately I was on a mission and missed their wedding. We spent many years apart because of working and living elsewhere but we were always close in our hearts. We love you, Carl and Sue. He will be one of the first I look for when I cross the veil.

Carl was such an important and strong influence on us, as a family friend, church leader, and personal example. When we think back on our childhoods and teen years in Pensacola, many fond memories include the entire McArthur family. We send our condolences and share in your faith at this time.

Catherine and family, I send my love and condolences. Carl was my first home teacher and brought his sons with him as they were old enough. I got to go on the Youth Temple Trip to the DC Temple and the World’s Fair that he planned. He was such a great leader, always kind and patient. Carl Mc Arthur is one of the Lord’s great ones. My husband, Bennie Castle, served under him as Stake Clerk in Pensacola as well as by his side as an ordinance worker in the Birmingham Temple. Bennie always spoke fondly of him. Carl’s work is not finished. It has only just begun in the world of spirits.

I offer my condolence for my grandfather Carl. J McArthur. Carl was my grandpa and his daughter Amy is my mom. I have lots of memories with Grandpa. I remember when him and Grandma would come see our family while living in Kansas. I also remember every year growing up we would go to both Atlanta and Pensacola to see him and other family. On that note I still remember their Greystone drive house in Pensacola, that is something I will always remember. In April 2022 I had the chance to take a roadtrip alone to see him and Grandma in Pheonix and some of my last memories I have with him was Watching Avengers: Endgame and Spiderman: No Way Home with him and he seemed to enjoy those movies. Another thing I did on that trip was being able to go to church with Grandma/Grandpa and I got to go to Elders quorum with him. At that time as well I had started going back to church a few months prior after being inactive and Grandma gave me his true to the faith book with his name on it. I still have it and will always hold on to it. Hearing the Story of how the current prophet Russel M. Nelson released him from being a stake president was very interesting to hear and Grandma/Grandpa also shared more stories from when Carl was a Stake President. Rest In Peace Grandpa.

I’ve known President McArthur for 46 years. He has always been a Great example of to me on how to treat others with his kindness and service to others. The McArthur family will always have a special place in my heart! Love you all!

It was great knowing Carl, I was able to call him Uncle Carl even though we weren’t blood,because my “brother from another Mother” Mike McArthur, was his nephew. RIP Carl

Carl McArthur was a good man who served the Lord faithfully every day of his life. His service to the Lord and his legacy will live on in some many others he touched on his journey here on this earth. He was a true and faithful servant and I am so grateful to have known him. My prayers are with the family and especially Grandma McArthur at this time. Love you all bunches Tori, Trent and Jodi.

I am Saddened to hear of President McArthurs passing but express joy at his ascension and gratitude for his service. He set me apart as a missionary and was always welcoming when I was hanging around Brian. Great man and great memories.
