About Anne Houghton Moore

Anne Houghton Moore, born in Danville, Virginia to the joy of her parents, Frances Houghton and William Lee Moore, passed away on January 20th, 2023 in Chandler, Arizona at the age of 75.

Continuing the legacy of her family, Anne championed intellectual inquiry, exploration, and diversity. She devoted herself to education, which included leading administrative and teaching roles at the College of William & Mary, advocating for public support of key initiatives at the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and pioneering new teaching models as the Associate Vice President of Learning Technologies at Virginia Tech. She humbly and energetically pursued her passion for advancing wisdom and compassion.

Anne loved her family, friends, travel, music, reading, nature, and an occasional fine sauvignon blanc. She thoroughly enjoyed engaging conversation with friends and family on important topics of the day. She embraced a broad universe of perspectives.

Anne was “Big Sister” to her surviving brother, William Moore (Barbara); “Mom” to her sons, Benjamin Pratt (Chiyo) and Jonathan Pratt (Jennifer); and “Annie” (or “Miss Piggy”) to her grandchildren, Chloe, Tyler, Sabrina, and Juliette.

A private family viewing is being held January 25th at the Gilbert Memorial Park in Gilbert, Arizona. A celebration of Anne’s life will be held for friends and loved ones within the coming weeks. Details of this online, virtual event will be forthcoming.

Anne was a dear friend since the beginning of our first year at George Washington High School, September, 1962. Anne was so bright and warm and personable. By our senior year, she was our Head Cheerleader. One of so many ways in her lifetime that she served others. Anne, you will be missed.

I met Ann many decades ago when we were both working at the College of Wm and Mary. We co-authored several scholarly articles, engaged in spirited conversations, and became friends along the way. Anne came to Madison, WI several years ago and we had the opportunity to spend a few hours together while on a tour of Wisconsin’s capital city. Anne hadn’t changed. As always, she had a wonderful sense of curiosity, an unusual appreciation for “viewpoint diversity,” and she continued to “share and spread joy” throughout our visit–including telling heartwarming stories about her sons and family members. Anne had such grace and “humanity.” Ann was a wonderful human being.

I knew Anne almost from the day I entered elementary school in Danville back in the 50’s. We had many classes together over the junior and senior high school years. I lived near her, and spent many hours at her home as she did at mine. We lost touch after college, but made contact again last year. I regret that I wasn’t able to see her again before her untimely death. Deepest sympathy to Billy and the entire family.

I met Anne during our freshman year at William and Mary, and we became sorority sisters and friends. Anne was a beautiful woman, inside and out; a brilliant scholar with commitment and integrity; an accomplished and forward-thinking academician and administrator; and a gift to our world. I will always remember her laugh and sparkling eyes. Count me among the many people who cherished Anne’s friendship and mourn her loss.

I met Anne at our hiking group and our wine group last year. I last spoke with her on January 13 when she had just returned from visiting family in Japan. She shared many memories of her life and family. I so enjoyed her company and will miss her. My deepest sympathy to her family.
